PHIL-US EXPO '08 NOTCHES 4TH YEAR SOON

With the advent of Spring's frolicsome atmosphere, TOPNOTCH ELECTRONICS, and a JanMar USA Corporation and one among the most successfully recognized Filipino-American businesses around, is all set once again to offer "PHIL-US EXPO '08" at the New Jersey National Guard Armory on Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18, 2008.

Already on its 4th year of celebrating the exposition after its 11 years of operation, Topnotch Electronics head honcho Isagani Morales is positively eyeing to attract as much participating business enterprises as the venue could hold. With the spacious area available, Gani expects a turnout of more than 20,000 participants and over 100 exhibitors this year.  Assuring the public with a different expo featuring nothing but only the best in Philippine Heritage and Commerce, the most-awaited occasion is already boasting of its "thrills and frills" plus a bevy of enterprising and entertaining surprises.

Topnotch Electronics, the moving spirit behind this ambitious project, initially gained its household popularity when its sale of wholesale priced electronically operated devices, which included the much patronized  Magic Sing, brand name cellular phones, a wide collection of CDs, DVDs and VCDs and a variety of phone cards, became in demand and boosted enormous ROI (return on investment).

Gani Morales, being a true-blooded entrepreneur that he is, didn't rest on his laurels. With the huge amount he's raking in, he wisely ventured into real estate and construction... and his decision was right! And as if his success wasn't enough, he even entered into an approved dealership of Direct TV, Dish Network and Western Union. To this day, Topnotch Electronics has already established branches in Woodside, (New York), Newark,(New Jersey), Florida and Jersey City.  Needless to say that whatever Gani touches seems to turn gold.

Filipinos, by nature, are fun-loving and love entertainment. With that in mind, Gani always sees to it that in every venture that he opted, there should be an entertaining factor. After having produced and sponsored numerous projects, Gani was instrumental in the participation of big named celebrities and entertainers who had already personally graced and regaled all his big production presentations in the East Coast. Like last year's event, with the cooperation of GMA Channel 7, the company's flag bearers in the persons of Ara Mina, Dennis Trillio and Gladys Guevarra more than broke all box-office sales.  This and more make up the total persona of businessman/philanthropist Gani Morales that aptly entitled him to be featured in the highly rated News and Public Affair show of GMA Pinoy TV in its segment, "Pinoy Abroad" as hosted by Ivan Mayrina.

This year's "PHIL-US EXPO ;08" is made possible through the joint efforts and cooperation of GMA Pinoy TV, NY and NJ Producers, and media partners like Newstar Philippines, Pinoy Chronicle, Filipino Times & Asia Review, and Planet Philippines NY.  Mark the date red on your calendar, (May 17 and 18), let's join together and be mighty proud to celebrate the great Heritage and enterprising industry of the Filipinos and let's all be witnesses as the grandiose event unfolds before our very eyes.

PHIL-US EXPO ‘08 Soon To Hit The Scene

After a series of organizational and scheme-related meetings, the long-ranged program of holding the 4th annual project of TOPNOTCH ELECTRONICS, aptly dubbed as the “Phil-US EXPO ‘08”, is emitting a bright light… a positive sign that the project in the offing is guaranteed of a predictable outcome. All indications are almost giving the show’s producers, with Topnotch Big Boss Isagani Morales on the lead, a brighter-than-red assurance to push through with the plans and the rest of the good-end result will eventually take its course.

With a straight focus like a reined horse, Gani Morales and his associate producers take the challenge in stride and together, they map out nothing but only the best that this ambitious project could offer… leaving no stone unturned…if only to outdo his own colossal productions in the past. This early, the producers are already considering a big-name male celebrity to grace the affair, together with topnotch-caliber talents of GMA Channel 7, (TOPNOTCH begets topnotch, don’t you notice?) just to maintain the entertainment portion of the exposition at its highest level.

Just last Saturday, the 5th, another meeting was called to finalize the initial phase of the project. Taken were chartering of the necessary areas to be covered in the implementation of the project, threshing out of any probable problems or extent of any hindrances and the possibility of a jack-rabbit start to have a smooth and continuous preparation. Actively present and sharing their views were, among others, Dr. Ramon Legarda, Ed Sunico,Luis Pedron, Satrick and Cathy Uy, Red Martinez, John Ynayan of Newstar Philippines, Emmanuel L. Agbanlog of the Filipino Times and Asian Review, Herbert Y. Magtoto of the Pinoy chronicle and of course, the group’s organizer/executive producer Isagani Morales. Many businessmen and product suppliers are interested and have already sent feelers about their willingness to participate and be part of the coming big event but their busy schedules and previous commitments made it impossible for them to attend the recent meeting. However, hopefully, they could get the chance to take part in the next session for their views and suggestions will definitely contribute to the consolidation and planning of the show.

The New Jersey National Guard Armory in Jersey City has been finally eyed as the perfect venue of “PHIL-US EXPO ‘08” which is set on May 17 and 18, Saturday and Sunday, respectively. This early, the producers and organizing committee are already inviting interested exhibitors and potential participants to avail of the prioritized stall locations to avoid the rush and closeout. There will be a spacious and well-organized exposition stall planning and other public amenity-oriented facilities built to ensure everybody’s comfortable and enjoyable two-day shopping spree or weekend getaway.

THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey.  There seems no stopping the organizational committee in their painstaking search for the best ways and means to ensure a grandiose and successful show for Topnotch Electronics’ 4th annual exposition project slated on May 17 and 18 at the New Jersey National Guard Armory in Jersey City.

Just last Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, another weekly session transpired and the way things are going, all plans are starting to take shape and this early, the roster of what-to-do is clearly showing signs of progress. Every organizer’s regular session increases in number and brighter ideas wittingly surface… thereby, contributing all the more to the betterment of the project. The number of investors and participating business enterprises is increasing impressively that gives the man-on-the-helm, Mr. Isagani Morales, a heightened enthusiasm and spirited mood.

The last meeting, which minutes was taken by Planet Philippines (NY-NJ) publisher/editor Luis Pedron, unexpectedly brought out more interesting ideas that  gave the plans on the table the much-needed assurance for a sure-fire hit. Every member in the team participates actively in the brainstorming and in collective efforts, they unselfishly contributed whatever is necessary, materially and otherwise.

Initially being eyed to lead the entertainment portion of the Expo are the popular contract stars of GMA Channel 7, who, in the past shows, have regularly contributed and participated in the said event. This year’s committee in entertainment has the Herculean task of surpassing the big turnout of last year’s production numbers. Big stars like Dennis Trillo, Ara Mina and Gladys Guevarra seem like a feat hard to surpass…or even to be at par with, to say the least. There are a lot of talents to choose from but stars of high caliber and with immense popularity are “buried-to-the-neck” with heavy schedules that could prevent them from leaving the country or even be away for just a couple of days. But the EXPO people are optimistic that their contact in the GMA Talent Center will never let them down.  Constant communication is on-going. As a matter of fact, Rachel Ann Wolfe (comebacking former beauty queen now slowly earning a name for herself as a singer like her mom, Annie Brazil, the Philippine’s  exponent of jazz), is Manila-bound to mediate and facilitate a “greasier” process between the two parties.

On hand to help and give PHIL.-US EXPO ‘08 their own share of assistance and support are the most-circulated and well-read papers in the tri-state area as represented by their respective publishers or editors: Herbert Y. Magtoto of the Pinoy Chronicle, John Ynayan of  Newstar Philippines, Lito Gajilan of Filipino Express, Luis Pedron of Planet Philippines, Emmanuel L. Agbanlog of Filipino Times and Asian Review and Manny Quisumbing of  Asian Bulletin.  Automatically, they are contracted as Industrial Partners.   Committed producers are Group Ole, Scat Entertainment, EdSun Entertainment, Miracles Entertainment, ReAl Entertainment, and MP Entertainment.  Perlas Ng Silangan, Sebello Realty, Inc., and Efren Dato are also giving their support.

Another meeting was held at the Fiesta Grill in West Side Ave., Jersey City on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, with the New Jersey Phil-Am Chamber of Commerce. The New Jersey Phil-Am. Chamber of Commerce has likewise pledged its unwavering support.

The Expo promises a more colorful and beneficial show for everyone… with more booths, more spacious parking area, with an active call center, a much wider selection of product commodities on sale, non-stop on-the-stage activities, and a Forum on networking other business professionals to be given by the Jersey City Phil-Am Chamber of Commerce and not to be missed, the much-awaited entertainment portion featuring nothing but only the best in Philippine showbusiness.

Act now for advance booking and mark May 17 and 18 as red-letter-days… for PHIL-US EXPO ’08 is a grand event not to be ignored. If there is but only one memorable show you have to see this year, PHIL-US EXPO ’08 is it. Strategically located at 678 Montgomery St. and Summit Avenue in Jersey City, the New Jersey National Guard Armory is definitely the place to be this early summer for a relaxing, wholesome and worthwhile family weekend.

Getting to know…

THE PASSIONATE SINGER-SONGWRITER NAMED “PASSION
By Herbert Y. Magtoto

It has always been believed that singers are born, not made… it’s either you have the talent or none at all. Although some people are lucky enough to be born not only with “golden” voices but with visually good looks, as well… these perfect complimenting features could easily win any pernickety and hard-to-please music aficionado’s discriminating taste. Because of the eminent display of the outpouring of his emotions and a compelling intensity that almost bares his soul when he sings, for Jeremy Manongdo of Northern California to pick “Passion” for his on-the-spotlight moniker is a perfect choice…aptly befitting a talent of his caliber! Easily, Passion could be tagged as “The sight and sound”, for he is undoubtedly a sight to behold while rendering  and emotionally interpreting any piece with his  distinct vocal range and peculiar style… much more, when he accompanies himself on the piano or with a guitar.

Having had wowed his audience in the East Coast in the past, Passion is set to thrill once more his growing number of fans when he returns on May 17 and 18 for the 4th Phil-US EXPO ’08, where he is slated to do a show as part of the exposition. So, for our readers who are eager to know more beyond the handsome face, and for those who haven’t been familiar with him, here’s an almost face-to-face interview with passion.

WHAT MUSIC DID YOU LISTEN WHEN YOU’RE GROWING UP?
Growing up, I always listened to a huge array of music.  Whether it was gospel, jazz, classical, R&B, even Disney tunes; each song influenced me someway or another.  But artists like Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, The Gaithers, Brian Mcknight, Boyz 2 Men, Craig David, Musiq Soulchild, Dru Hill, Miles Davis, Coltrain John Coltrane, just to name a few.

WHAT INFLUENCED YOU?
During my younger years, I was deeply inspired by my uncle Robert who is actually a professional singer and piano player.  Typically, Filipino families would have karaoke machines and Magic Mics are their parties, our family never had any of that because we played everything live with our piano and everyone singing together as a family.

Another influence is just growing up in church and realizing that we can use our gifts to praise God and give it our best. Because Christ has given each individual certain gifts and talents, I just wanted to make sure that in my life, He would be the one to receive glory through my music and ministry.

In terms of recording music, I was influenced by my cousin JR from Southern California after showing me his recording projects.

WHAT MUSIC INSTRUMENT DO YOU PLAY?
I play the piano, drums, guitar, and bass guitar.  I taught myself how to play piano when i was 4 years old and grew up loving it.  During my teen years, I picked up the drums when I was 14 and started teaching myself how to play guitar when I was 15.  The bass guitar came soon thereafter.

WHAT OTHER MUSIC ARTISTS YOU PERFORM OR COLLABORATE WITH?
I've done shows with major artists like Bobby Valentino, Colbie Caillat, Ernie Halter, Kirk Franklin, Trinitee 5:7, Goapele, just to name a few.

And on the inpendent side, I've done shows with Gabe Bondoc (one of my close friends), John Pratts and Maja Salvador, i've been asked to open for Gary V.

Aside from my performing life, I am a producer and songwriter and have produced and wrote music for artists like Slim from 112, I've been asked to do projects for the show Heroes on NBC, and also produced tracks with producer, Infinity (the man who produced the hit single, "Take Me As I Am" by Mary J. Blige and "Daydreamin'" by Lupe Fiasco)

ANY FRIENDS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?
I am friends with Slim (Marvin Scandrick) and Kirk Franklin more so than others.

ANY FAVORITE CHARITY YOU HAVE IN MIND?
I do alot of work for Gawad Kalinga which I think is a great organization that is really making changes.
I am currently sponsoring a young girl named Dulce Maria Lopez that lives in El Salvador and i'm connected to her from an organization called Compassion International.  Invisible Children is one of my favorite charities as well.

HOW DO YOU THINK MUSIC HAS CHANGE WHILE YOU’RE GROWING UP?
I think that music has changed in many different ways.  Not to say that music will ever stay the same because it's an ongoing change.  I feel that our music is responsible in being a "model" to our generation and if the music is portraying things like sex, money, degrading women, etc., what message is it bringing out and whose lives is it influencing.  That is why i think it is a responsibility on my part to be a positive outlet speaking about love, life, and faith.  Somebody's gotta do it.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST?
It has always been really important to me.  I love my parents!  I have 2 brothers (one older and one younger) and my younger brother is disabled.   He got sick when he was 6 months old and got meningitis.  Since then, he hasn't been able to walk, talk, or hear.  Even though growing up wasn't always easy, I enjoy spending time with him and taking care of him.

I enjoy being at church because its always an opportunity to be fed spiritually and to praise and forget about the stresses that come up during the week.  Aside from the obvious fact that I enjoy performing and singing, I like to watch movies, play ultimate frisbee, be with my friends, and traveling to different cities and countries.

WHY PASSION?
Simple, because of the passion i have for music and the love I have for Christ

ANY MESSAGE TO YOUR FANS

Thank you to all of my listeners and supporters.  This journey has been a blessing and without your ears, your mind, and your heart, this music that I put out would just be noise, but because you are all so passionate and chose to listen with your heart, you hear the message, the core, of my music and thats what it should be all about.  Nothing more, nothing less. Jesus loves you and I hope this year is a year of positive change.

KAYUMANGGI AT THE PHIL-US EXPO ‘08

By Herbert Y. Magtoto

What pots and pans are they talking about? Same creative materials were struck with a rhythmic beat by souls that long to vibrate tunes to the world. Such indigenous musical instruments later became the foundation of a group of musicians from Bulacan that thrived under the influence of a wide genre of music.

“Apo ni Enteng”

Kayumanggi, then known as Apo ni Enteng deriving its name from their grandfather Enteng, started during the era of “Battle of the Bands” where most radio stations in Manila, during the early 90s, capitalized on the on-going trend to funnel-in talents from all over the country. In every town and city, each fiesta would be breaking grounds for talented artists longing for recognition. In such era, what celebration did not have “Battle of the Bands” as its main attraction, either for entertainment or fund raising? The intensity for new small town bands in the early 90s was so much that the musical world was literally divided just into two categories. In that time, aside from the band break outs, hip-hop was also equating the radio spectrum.  No wonder, a bunch of guys from Bulacan picked up their pots and pans and started drumming their way to the stage. In 1994, Kayumanggi won the American Idol of those days, yes a Battle of the Bands competition, in Taytay Rizal that would start a career in the most pirated industry in society. At that time, aspiring artists dream of becoming big (in fame and money) because there was none yet of the pirated CDs in Quiapo that would discourage them from pursuing a dream. What was clearly in the air was the rush for the gold by being the “new band in town”.

Blending in this band boom of the 90s, the group quickly toured the country for more competitions. (Rule of thumb was to win in the most number of contests so that talent scouts will start to notice the band). And so they did get noticed.

Getting in and out

As fast as they were getting into the scene, they also quickly waned in enthusiasm towards the end of the decade as the brothers have prioritized finishing college. But as a musician will always be a musician, they immediately regrouped after their separate academic endeavors to form what would now be known as ‘Kayumanggi”. But at this time, the music scene had already morphed into something else. In the Philippines, there is an “uso uso” (fad) attitude where everybody gets overdosed and quickly gets saturated by a trend. By the turn of the decade, solo artists started to rule the airwaves leaving less room for the group. Later, the group would realize that such was a blessing in disguise as better opportunities were waiting for their talents.

Lunch time TV

“Chowtime na” , a popular lunchtime TV show on IBC 13 in the Philippines just had the perfect spot for the guys. Kayumanggi became a regular performer of such show watched by hundreds of thousands of Filipinos nationwide via satellite. Their efforts started to pay off when, finally, hobby turns into profit when sponsors started to come. The group carried big brands such as Accel and Converse.

Kayumanggi in US

In March 2006, after the lapse of a major entertainment contract in the Philippines, the group decided to rock the shores of America. Kayumanggi composed of three brothers.  They are Edward Valerio – drums, Mackie Valerio – lead guitarist, and Lester Valerio – bass guitarist.  Kayumanggi is now here in the US reaching out to Filipinos, whose color has given them their name. They now bring to Filipino gatherings a new blend of homegrown experience born out of rich musical influences from back home.  Following their gigs are the producers in the industry of entertainment, Ed Sunico of EdSun Entertainment, John Ynayan of Newstar Philippines, and Herbert Y. Magtoto of  Pinoy Chronicle  Ed Sunico and John Ynayan saw their potentials in them and the toured the Kayumanggi in different venues like Perlas Ng Silangan, Wazzup, Baryo, Taste of Asia, Bistro Filipino (Jamaica), Bistro San Miguel, Golden Dragon (Maryland), Dampa, Salve Sam, Raritan Expo, Phiippine Independence in NY, Wicked Willy’s in Bleecker Manhattan, and private parties.

The Kayumanggi is slated to perform at the Phil-US Expo ’08 on May 17 and 18 at the New Jersey National Guard Armory in Jersey City.  They will sing the Phil-US Expo jingle penned and arranged by the famous singer/songwriter/composer/arranger Archie D. of Cool Music Production, Inc.

DEBUT ALBUM

Kayumanggi  is launching its debut album on March, 2008 entitled ”Lahing Kayumanggi”.  Executive Producers of their album are Ed Sunico and John Ynayan.

On the music front:

ARCHIE DAIROCAS…NOW CARVING A NICHE,SOON A MUSIC TYCOON

By Bobby T. Yalong

Music, being the universal language by which people of diverse ethnicities could comprehensively communicate and interact even in the absence of any visual aid, has always been (and forever will be) the only intellectual invention of men that naturally captures and effectively affects the general emotion of mankind as they express, react, relate, and perceive the lyrics and musicality of a song or a piece, an etude, a lullaby or any literary composition. Great figures in this field had been immortalized by their legacy… as the world constantly turns, the nascence of future masters never ceases to grow in number and the promise of fame is still held suspended in midair waiting for any lucky taker. Currently, the new generation of music composers and producers have embraced a wide array of genre and despite the enumerable volumes already on file and recorded, the list is left open and the spotlight keeps on searching for the right guys to fill the available slots.

Filipinos, at this juncture, should be proud of a Pinoy who’s just some few steps away from bagging one of the most coveted spots. Having toiled and devoted his heart and soul into such field, Archie Dairocas is one avid exponent of this art who almost breathes and reeks of his music…and because of his being born with the “ear” and maybe, a third “eye”, the ingenuity in him tosses and sets him apart from his counterparts. Armed with a degree from the Berkeley College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts Archie’s innate talent was honed all the more and the spirited musicality in his blood spurts incessantly. As if his being a producer, composer and mixing engineer aren’t enough, Archie’s being a Grammy member (since 2003) injects that “flavored” impact to embellish his name that could catapult him to a celebrated status.

After he started as a songwriter/composer, 1991 saw Archie occupied the main stage as one among Vicor Music Corporation’s prized talents where he was launched via “Ipakita Mo””, his first album, with a carrier single “Kasayaw” that earned him gold and made “Archie D” a household name. Aside from his hit song, the bliss of contentment made him more than soared to high heavens for having his ultimate crush, Manilyn Reynes, (a fellow Visayan) with him in the same recording outfit…giving him all the chances to be with her more often especially during their road shows and promotional tours. Moving to Octoarts Recording Company  ((Vicor’s arch-rival) the following year was a decision he never regretted. With a new album, “Mahal Na Mahal”, that constantly stayed in the Top 10 of the music chart, he continuously enjoyed the glam and glitter of his blossoming popularity. But the sweet smell (and the taste, maybe) of success won’t suffice to keep Archie’s body and soul together and so, when the opportunity to look for the proverbial “greener pastures” knocked at his door, he gamely welcomed it and, since then, New York became his newfound land.

The lure of music, notwithstanding the limelight, wasn’t left behind…for even in the US, Archie’s passion for his music kept on burning…even more intense than before. With diligence and utmost frugality, he was able to save for his dream project---a recording studio of his own…the Cool Music Production, Inc., equipped with the latest gadgets and high standard technical equipment… ‘though far from being spacious, but with high quality produced sounds that could be at par with any established big-time recording company.

“I’m always careful on how I write the lyrics and compose the melody of my songs… especially, the chorus part. I usually sleep with what I’m doing…revisit it after a short nap when I have refreshed my brains…and make the necessary revisions until everything turns out okay and I feel more than contented!” Archie voluntarily admits if only to prove his clever sense of perfection. “I’m not gonna present it if it isn’t worth-recording and a potential hit.” He added with full conviction.

Having had written a number of hits (as recorded by the country’s ace balladeers and chanteuses), successfully produced numerous records and introduced promising new talents, his works are characterized by a sincere fluidity of sounds and well written lyrics… fast songs with infectiously bouncy beat… ballads with words that are convincingly akin to the senses… love songs with melody that could be hauntingly melancholy or pop numbers which are audaciously vibrant…and a finished piece that is unmistakably very Archie D. His serious side is no different from any ordinary guy. It was a rather intriguing (albeit funny) revelation that paints his “otro persona”, a seemingly far-cry aura from the imperturbable (‘though galliard at times) personality he projects meeting him up-close. Just take note on the things he says and the points he wants to stress.

“I don’t take Viagra  (or any sexually-related enhancing drug). I dig the enticing smile of Valerie Concepcion (and I don’t care if she’s already a mother at 16…motherhood makes her all the more very enticing and voluptuous). I used to fantasize a lot about Manilyn Reynes when I was in Manila. I was easily smitten by any girl, (or gay, if ever there was…), who had a close resemblance to Manilyn…but now, she’s no longer my type! (Laughs). I think the most beautiful producer is Cathy Uy…others are great looking, too…only, they’re just older! (another crispy laughter) Currently, I’m a huge fan of Charice Pempengco and because of my avid adulation of her, I was inspired to compose two songs I’m sure would fit her style and range (Check: YouTube: Charice Pempengco Future # 1 Song, parts 1 and 2) and that, I wish some really serious producers will pick these 2 ditties for Charice. At this point and time, I fear nobody but I love everybody who makes it really big in this business!” Isn’t that a brief, concise and direct-to-the-core kind of confession?

Inspiration plays a pivotal role in inducing one to hit the height of creativeness in him. If others needed extraordinary external forces and means to stimulate their aesthetic senses, Archie only has ordinary people around him to get him to work inspiringly. “Actually, my cat “MingMing”, is my personal barometer when I work in my studio. After a long grueling hours of composing…and when she meows, the song is done!”

Currently, this Pinoy music genius has his musical “urge” at its tip-top shape again that made him come up with another potential hit neatly tucked under his sleeves. Ready for release, the new composition’s maiden airing will be in late Spring for this year’s Topnotch Electronics 7th annual project, the Phil-US EXPO ’08 at the New Jersey National Guard Armory (May 17 and 18). Inspired by the project’s theme, it merely took Archie a couple of hours to write and compose the song that will eventually become Topnotch Electronics’ official jingle.

“EXPO Jingle is my new baby. It will give impact to fans by listening to the truth about the Phil-US Expo headed by Gani Morales. The jingle has a significantly “attractive” chorus that is relative to any Archie D composition. This could be a hit if given proper attention and constant plugging. In this, my energy was doubly pepped with the participation of Pinoy Chronicle’s Herbert Y. Magtoto  (an amazing discovery) who’ll do the vocal interpretation to the accompaniment by another popular name in the Philippine music industry (now making it big in the East Coast), the Valerio Brothers (Macky, Edward and Lester), collectively known as the Kayumanggi Band.”

Archie Dairocas (popularly known as Archie D) is a perfect embodiment of a plethora of musical talent and wit…of painstaking hard work and dedication…of hope and aspiration…of almost everything and anything…but down the line, he is nothing but a simple, low-key and a quintessential bound-to-succeed-kind-of-a-guy. It’s written in his stars. He was destined to reach his goals and he’s almost there. For dreaming is free and limitless, definitely, Archie wastes no time to dream big. I bet, Archie will be the least surprised when he wakes up a music tycoon after carving a name while in his sleep.

Gifted with an ear not only for music but for knowledgeable facts-of-life, as well, Archie always takes this “food-for-thought” words he once heard from Dr. Legarda as one of his guiding principles: “This is a win or lose business…sometimes you’re up, there are times when you’re down. Try to learn the ropes of the trade as you go on…keep building bridges, not burn them!” §

Katrina Halili:

The hot girl next door will be at the Phil-US Expo ‘08

Katrina Halili is far more than the image she projects on TV and on magazine covers. She reveals that she’s a boring person.

One of the hottest ladies in the business doesn’t like to go out at night and prefers to stay home, go on-line and chat with her fans. This also serves as a stress-reliever from her hectic and very tiring schedule. “Mag-iinternet muna ako para sa mga fans ko, to say thank you at para mag promote.”

Unlike most celebrities, she doesn’t like shopping. She says she is more of the grocery lover than a clothes buyer. In fact Katrina only shops for stuff that she needs. She wears anything as long as she’s comfortable in it. She likes to wear long skirts, polo shirts and skinny jeans. “Sobrang thankful ako na lumabas siya, yun yung talagang fit sa akin, hindi bagay sa akin yung mga flared.”

The former star of hit shows Darna, Majika and Atlantika is often seen on set, dozing off to dreamland. “Natutulog ako pag kailangan, minsan 30 minutes. Pero minsan matagal may time na nakatulog ako ng 8 or 9 hours”.

Katrina the Actress

She never dreamt of being an actress even before she entered Starstruck. “Hindi ko talaga hilig to, mahiyain kasi ako. Walang naniniwala sakin kasi madaldal ako, pero mahiyain talaga ako”. She never goes to auditions, projects are given to her, she’s always been thankful for all this blessings she’s been receiving. “Na-paka laki ng pa-sasalamat ko sa GMA, kasi di nila ako pinabayaan. From the start, right after Strarstruck di ako nawalan ng show, as in sunod sunod siya.”

Katrina also avows that, her shows are her training ground. She thinks of them as workshops, keeping in mind all the things she’s learned from her directors down to her co-stars. Every actor starts at ground zero, Kat is no exception, during her first shows she didn’t know how to act and had difficulty looking through the right camera. “Nung una hindi talaga ako marunong tumingin ng camera ko. Ngayon medjo natututo nako.”

Although she plays mostly antagonist roles, she finds it fun because she gets to work with the top leading men of GMA network.

Katrina the Sexy Princess

Voted FHM’s #1 sexiest woman in the Philippines last 2006. Katrina never imagined that she’d make the list or beat Angel Locsin for the top position. “Na shock talaga ako na nanalo ako, kasi si Angel Locsin yung kalaban ko eh”.

Knowing that Angel has always been a protagonist in numerous shows, Kat knew that she would most likely win the poll. “Kahit sabihin mo na sexy ang tingin ng tao sa iyo. Iba pa rin yung fans ng Bida eh”, she humbly said. She’s thankful that even if she plays kontrabida characters, she still has a lot of supporters.

We asked her about her thoughts regarding young stars like her, doing sexy spreads in magazines and on billboards. “Happy naman ako para sa kanila, Wala naman masama kung mag pose kaming mga wholesome stars, depende yan kasi sa tao kung gusto nilang mag pa bastos, wala naman akong nakikita na bastos sa ginawa ko.”

Katrina doesn’t go through special diets or spend time in the gym. She keeps her sexy figure by eating sandwiches and is not used to eating a lot. She also doesn’t eat rice at all, “Ulam lang.”

She even brings her own toaster to the set to keep herself from being tempted to indulge in unhealthy snack food. “May oven toaster ako dito (pointing to the toaster beside her), wheat bread and cream cheese. Dalawa (sandwich) lang yung kina-kain ko buong araw.”

Katrina Loves...

Being sexy doesn’t necessarily mean that you have men lining-up and professing their undying love for you. Katrina can truly attest to this. Still single at 21, she also admits that she’s never been courted even before she became a famous celebrity. “Hindi pa ko showbiz zero na ko sa love life eh, saka gusto ko naman maligawan.” All her past relationships, evolved from being friends with the guy.

Regarding her involvement with Mark Herras, they’ve been good friends since Starstruck. “Hindi dumating sa point na nananliligaw siya,” in addition to that they seldom talk due to their tight schedules. So squash those rumors right there!

What's Next for Kat?

“Sa utak ko ngayon, wala pa akong iniisip na ganoon (long term plans). Siguro dahil bata pa ako.” She wants to finish school eventually, but does not think it is possible in the near future. “Eenjoy ko lang to, happy ako sa trabaho ko eh.”

Watch her at the Phil-US Expo ’08 on May 17 and 18, 2008 at the New Jersey National Guard Armory in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Another GMA7 Personality to perform at the Phil-US Expo ‘08

Jay-R is the most promising male RnB phenomenon that ever hit the local music scene.

Gaudencio A. Sillona III, popularly known as Jay-R, was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He was 2nd year college, taking up Computer Engineering, in Devry University in L.A. when he decided to go here and fulfill his dream… to become a singer.

He was once a part of a group named FI (First Impression). The group consisted of 5 guys namely: Mike Gabriel, Alex Bacani, Jayr Sillona, Jimmy Martinez (who came with Jay-R to Manila) and Owen Amurao. When Mike, Owen and Alex went their separate ways, Jay-R and Jimmy continued the group by adding another talented singer named Kris Cadevida. They would do gigs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Michigan.

Jay-R also belonged to a band that was lead by his Uncle, Robert Sillona. The band was called The Howlers. of his uncle’s band was a huge part in Jay-R’s career… it taught him the ways of the stage!

He is currently signed under Universal Records. His first album, aptly titled ‘Game Face’, has 12 tracks on it, containing 2 original Tagalog songs: “Kaibigan”, written by his sister, Jhing Sillona; and “Bakit Pa Ba?” written by Vehnee Saturno. Most of the other songs on the album are RnB. He writes and produces his own songs. His first single “Design for Love” is a hip-hop/ RnB single that exhibits Jay-R’s amazing talent in singing and dancing.

People are instantly attracted to him as he walks inside a room. The attraction becomes even stronger as he starts to perform. The moment the person and the music assumes a single, harmonious creation, it's sheer enchantment! JayR has just released his very first album under Universal Records label. And yet it feels like has been around for long as he's fast becoming one established act

Don’t miss the performance of Jay-R at the Phil-US Expo ’08 at the New Jersey National Guard Armory in jersey City New Jersey on May 17 and 18, 2008.

Cassandra Kubinski, the songwriter/performer at the Phil-US Expo ‘08

The Record- HOLD THE SUN

“Hold the Sun” is NYC songwriter/singer Cassandra Kubinski’s full-length follow up to the acclaimed 2005 EP “hiding underneath.”  The more organic pop/rock/jazz sound of “Hold the Sun” shows an evolution and maturation from the pop sound of “hiding,” but keeps the sassy and intelligent lyrics, sparkling piano playing, and crystal voice Kubinski has become known for.  Evoking at times Tori Amos, Norah Jones, Natalie Maines, and Carole King, the collection of songs on “Hold the Sun” reflects a writer coming of age; it deals with ambition for the future, reflections rooted in the past, and of course, love.  In her own words:  “I wanted this record to be more honest and spontaneous than “hiding underneath” was, and to reflect my rock influences more.  After touring for 2 years behind “hiding” and working with so many other writers and artists, I wanted to capture performances that were more “live” sounding, both from my musicians and myself.”  The result is an album of nuanced vocal performances, ranging from the fire and rough passion of “Ride Alone” and “Racecar” to the bittersweet regret of “Echoes” and “Hardly Is A Love Song” to the naked, grateful romance of “Cradle the Moon.”  “My biggest influence as a writer is probably Billy Joel…the range of emotions he covers on each album, the honesty and immediacy of his lyrics, and his sense of humor.”  The independently funded and released album is co-produced by Cassandra and Doug Bull.

The Songwriter

Kubinski has spent the last few years playing NYC (Cutting Room, Living Room, Bitter End, Knitting Factory, Rockwood Music Hall), the Northeast, and as far as Germany.  Along the way, she’s kicked off a reputation as an award-winning, creative, ambitious songstress, garnering accolades from the Billboard World Song Contest (3rd place Pop winner for “Wherever You Wait”), Positive Pop (digital distro winner for “Cradle the Moon”), and major industry organizations (showcases for Songwriters Hall of Fame, Songwriters Guild of America, BMI, Songwriter’s Circle).  She’s also the winner of the prestigious 2006 Abe Olman award, given to the year’s most promising songwriters from the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the 2007 Anna Sosenko Assist Trust grant.  On tour, Kubinski has been seen opening for Anna Nalick, the October Project, and Ingram Hill, among others.  You can find her music distributed through her website, www.CKubinski.com, as well as on iTunes and on terrestrial and internet radio stations (WFUV, Harris Radio, etc.) and podcasts worldwide.  She tours with her guitarist, James Adamo, and often plays with a rotating cast of well-known musicians in NYC.  Her latest project is contributing songs and appearing as Sam in “Clear Blue Tuesday,” the rock movie/musical slated for Festival release in Winter 2008.

The Back Story

Cassandra Kubinski began her performing career in Enfield, CT, where she was raised.  She squeaked out “Somewhere Out There” at the ripe age of 3, and there was no shutting her up after that.  At 13, she began her professional performing career, playing “Annie” in the 20th anniversary revival of the show at its birthplace, the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, CT.  Other leading theatre roles followed, as well as film and TV performances with Michael J. Fox in “Spin City,” and Anna Paquin and Sean Connery in the film “Finding Forrester.”  She is a graduate of Florida State University and continues to act in New York theatre and film productions, including roles at Lincoln Center and off-Broadway.

In Her Spare Time…

Cassandra is involved as a volunteer performer for LifeBeat, the music industry’s AIDS-fighting organization, and received the 2006 Bob Caviano Service Award for her dedication to the cause.
She is also a published writer/reviewer for SongwritersTipJar.com, Indie-Music.com, and Music News Nashville, educational and networking websites for songwriters.

She is short (5 feet), a certified dark chocoholic, and a Leo…..which explains a lot.

On May 17 and 18, 2008, you will hear the songwriter/performer at the Phil-US Expo ’08 at the New Jersey National Guard Armory at 678 Montgomery St. and Summit Ave. in Jersey City.  For more info please call 201.332.4973 and 973.239.2539 or visit www.phil-us-expo.com

David Pomeranz at the Phil-US Expo ‘08

Born in New York City and raised on Long Island, David showed signs of “things to come” by conducting to his parent’s records on the playroom table and putting on shows for neighbors in the backyard.  His first experiences singing in public were performing duets with his father in Synagogue.  Before long, David learned to play the piano, taught himself to play guitar and drums and, by age 14, began writing his first songs.  His teen years were spent playing in rock bands (with a stint in a Cincinnati band which what was to become Pure Prairie League) until at the tender age of 19, he got his first professional break when Decca Records signed him to a multi-album solo contract.

David Pomeranz’ songs and recordings have sold over 40 million copies worldwide and his concert performances have delighted and inspired millions.

Described by Billboard Magazine as “...one of the finer voices of our time”, David has recorded eight highly acclaimed solo albums. His 1999 release, “Born For You – His Best And More” (MCA/Universal), a collection of his love songs, past and present, was recorded in Manila and, to date, has sold over 500,000 albums in the Philippines alone - making it the biggest selling album in the history of that country (the title song, “Born For You” was awarded by Filscap as the “Most Performed Foreign Song Of 1999.) The album includes a stunning duet version of David’s classic, “If You Walked Away” with mega-star, Sharon Cuneta and contains new recordings of David’s hits, “King And Queen Of Hearts””, “Got To Believe In Magic” (both from the motion picture, “Zapped”), “Tryin’ To Get The Feeling Again”; and “The Old Songs”. His follow up effort, “The Eyes Of Christmas”, released in Christmas of 2000, inspired a three hour television special on GMA-7 for which David was host (“David Pomeranz – A Christmas Star” was viewed in record numbers throughout the Philippines) His most recent album release for Universal, “On This Day”, has produced no less than 4 mega-radio hits and has, likewise, become a top-selling favorite.

David’s other solo album efforts include his newest 2007 release, “Hold Tight” (Becca/Universal), “New Blues” and “Time To Fly” (Decca/MCA); ”It’s In Every One Of Us” (Arista); “The Truth Of Us”” (Atlantic/Pacific - co-produced by David and legendary Paul Simon producer, Roy Halee) and his greatest hits collection, “The Best Of David Pomeranz” (Warner Bros.)

David’s songs have been recorded and/or performed by scores of artists including Bette Midler, Grover Washington Jr., Barry Manilow (whose renditions of David’s classic compositions “Tryin’ To Get The Feeling Again” and “The Old Songs” were both Number One hits), Richie Sambora (of Bon Jovi), Cliff Richard (who has recorded three of David’s songs including the Top 10 hit “I Still Believe In You”), Freddie Mercury, Kenny Loggins, Isaac Hayes, Dennis DeYoung (of Styx), Harry Belafonte, Phoebe Snow, Leo Sayer, Hubert Laws, Glen Campbell, Kenny Rogers, The Carpenters, Andy Williams, Donna Summer, The Hollies, Eddie Kendricks (of the Temptations), Lea Salonga, John Denver, The Muppets, and Kathie Lee Gifford.  In 2002, Rapper, Missy Elliott, sampled David’s music for her hit single, “One Minute Man” which went to number three on the Billboard Charts.

David songwriting projects have earned him 22 Platinum and 18 Gold records.

On May 17 and 18, 2008 at the New Jersey National Guard Armory in Jersey City, David Pomeranz will perform live.  For more information please call 201.920.6936 / 973.239.2539 or visit www.phil-us-expo.com

The Kuwagos will join the line ups for Phil-US Expo ‘08
By Ted Reyes

WHEN a band comes up with an album, very few can appreciate the blood and guts involved in pulling off such a task.

Perhaps the regularity of bands coming up with new albums killed the novelty of the deed, especially here in the US, where everyone earns dollars and anybody can just go into a studio and tape whatever there is to be taped.

Likewise, a lot of people buy computers with recording software and record their music themselves - D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself)

In the old days recording artists are often called, recording stars. Now, they are simply called recording artists.

Sadly, the glitz and glamour that was once bestowed upon recording artists have tarnished due to the ‘ordinariness’ of the art of recording. Anybody can be a recording artist today.

This is why The Kuwagos matter.

The Kuwagos, the Bergenfield, NJ band that released their debut album, has put the shine back on the star and has taken D.I.Y to another level - the level of excellence.

The recording of their debut is D.I.Y in the highest order.

The songs were superbly written, the performances were impeccable, the recordings were well done, and the packing of the physical CD is that of commercial quality.

Considering the fact that the hands that wrote and performed the songs were the same hands that put the cellophane shrink wrap around the CD case, it is just fitting to call The Kuwagos recording stars more than anything else.

A lot of aspiring artists, with money, go for the big bucks studio but still manage to create a CD-full of crap. But the Kuwagos, with just about anything needed to come up with a good recording, managed to make a great one.

The Kuwagos matter. for many reasons. Here are a few:

They matter because they have put great song writing into D.I.Y. and proved that financial limitation is not a limitation at all.

Likewise, they have proven once and for all that what really matters is not the million-dollar gear that records and manufactures the CD. It is the material that is inside the CD that counts.

Deep Foundation to showcase their music at the Phil-US Expo ‘08

If judged by mere appearance and ethnicity, you will find conflicting perceptions of the hip hop group, Deep Foundation. To many hip hop laymen, they come across as another rag-tag assembly of long-winded pseudo-political emcees that border on hip hop and alt-rock. To those outside the hip hop circle, murmurs of identity crisis and terms like wanna-be surface in conversation. Those familiar with DF however, know that they are neither the former nor the latter.

Deep Foundation is a culmination of unique styles, backgrounds, upbringings, values and experiences, brought to life by the words of six emcees: MUG Shot, ILL Poetik, CJ, Proseed, VerbalTek  and WordsArize.  With assistance from Sawnd G, and the body-bending break-dance of resident B-Boy

Suitkace,
Deep Foundation has captivated audiences up and down the east coast.  With members residing in Queens and New Jersey, the collaboration seemed unlikely at first. However, the chemistry within the group, aided by bond of friendship that most members shared prior to thegroup's establishment, was instant and natural.

They have not only surmounted the racially constructed obstacles present within hip hop, but the odds of bringing together a sundry collection of personalities whilst creating a sound unique to
the stories and voices of their distinct perspectives. Exuding the pride of true Filipinos, the brash confidence of Tri-Staters, and the distinct limp and swagger of Hip Hop, the group has shared their
opinions, sense of humor and overall love for hip hop at various colleges, clubs, charity events and hip hop functions since 2001.

They take a focused approach, devoting their time and effort to the creation of music, the enjoyment of their listeners and their positive influence on the public outlook on hip hop at large. In their constant pursuit of greatness, they pay homage to life, beats, rhymes, love, dedication, friendship and trust, praising their freedom to express, and expressing only what they feel free to express. Deep Foundation has arrived as a fresh lease on grass roots rebels providing gritty east coast sounds with a name you can trust.

Deep foundation will showcase their music at the Phil-US Expo ’08. For more info please call 201.920.6936 / 973.239.2539 or visit www.phil-us-expo.com.

J Cabrera to expose his music at the Phil-US Expo ‘08

Like a man chasing after and wooing a beautiful woman, J has been pursuing his dream of being a professional recording artist for years with passion, patience and a few great lines.

Singing since kindergarten to the pretty 5 year olds in his class, J decided in 1996 to try his hand at making his passion his living. He answered an ad in New York’s Village Voice for a male vocal group, auditioned with a song he had written himself, and was made a member the next day. Being in an upstart boy band did not appeal to him though and within 3 months, J was out. However, during his time with the group, J met producer Angelo Velasquez and the two continued writing music together, eventually turning their collaborations into J’s songs: I Don’t Mind, Don’t Break My Heart, and Girl In My Dreams. J next was signed to an independent label, where he spent 2 years on the bench as they moved forward with other artists. Undeterred, J left the label and began booking his own shows and promoting himself anywhere he could.

Performing one night at a NYC bar, J caught the attention of Nemesis Records CEO Kingmin, who immediately approached J about working with the label. With years’ worth of experience and songs under his belt, J was more than ready to bring his music to a broad audience and had finally found a label that was ready to move with him. Nemesis wasted no time and quickly got J on the radio in NYC and launched a website for the singer so fans could find him.

J built his buzz in the underground and recorded music for his debut EP on Nemesis Records. His single I Don’t Mind, got some well-deserved airplay radio at major R&B and Hip Hop station WBLS 107.5 and was being requested at other local stations.

A couple of singles that lit up New York commercial radio and then he disappeared back underground popping up under-the-radar only to co-write songs with Kristine Sa for "Hopeless Romantic". The truth is that J actually put his own project on hold in order to help Kristine with hers. Now that’s a friend!

In between sessions with Kristine, J laid down some thoughts & emotions that very quickly gelled into full-blown songs. Two of those songs are now available as free downloads on his MySpace page. Over expert production by Kadis & Sean (G-Unit) and Dave Liang (The Shanghai Restoration Project, Carl Thomas), J reintroduces himself (to the ladies) on "For You", and details the possible end of a long relationship on "What’s It Gonna Take". Smooth as ever and with a new sound, J. Cabrera steps out of the background and back into the spotlight where he belongs. Welcome back J!

As J's popularity grows and more people are exposed to his music, no doubt some of those pretty girls from J's kindergarten class will be calling in to request that familiar smooth voice.

You can watch J Cabrera at the Phil-US Expo ’08 on May 17 or 18, 2008 at the New Jersey National Guard Armory at 678 Montgomery St. and Summit Ave. in Jersey City.  For more info please contact 201.332.4973 or 973.239.2539.

The Bonded Band: MOXIE, at the Phil-US Expo ‘08
By Herbert Y. Magtoto

The mushrooming and constant growing in number of singing groups and bands come to no surprise anymore… for Pinoys are known to be born with innate musicality or, at the least, musically inclined. Whenever there are Pinoys, there certainly will be karaoke machines or any sing-along gadget, for music is always like a shadow among Pinoys --- inseparable! Bring Pinoys out of the country and undoubtedly, their music won’t be left behind.

And the way MOXIE Band was formed wasn’t any different from the rest. Born in Eatontown, New Jersey, it all started from being members of “Servants of the Lord”, a church choir jointly composed of Will Acedera (the lead guitarist), Carlos (the drummer, who was the lead guitarist before Will joined in 2003), Shon Montano (keyboard / vocals), Ian (bassist), and two of Will’s cousins (who are both guitarist and drummer). Since the members are all rockers and almost all-around players, they constantly went on jamming sessions every after each choir assignment… until they felt they satisfactorily achieve some sort of perfecting a repertoire and ready for the big gig.

The year 2004 gave birth to a promising all-Filipino band, “Banda Ni Popoy” (named after Will’s domestic moniker… since they didn’t even bother to think of something more profound) and the following year tested their performing capability by way of their much-awaited baptism of fire… that of being part of the  “Pinoy Band Festival 2005”, a hometown band fest ably organized by Will and his “Kumpare” Dodo Morales, with proceeds that benefited the Bantay-Bata Foundation.

By 2006, “Banda Ni Popoy” was re-christened “Moxie Band”, (as suggested by Shon, the keyboardist) in time after two of the members quitted and formed their own group. The problem of losing a drummer and bassist didn’t last long. After a few months, Moxie got a new drummer in the person of Jason and a bassist in Bong Antonio (from the “Servants of the Lord Choir”). The band was in full force again and soon after, a number of gigs, concert openings and travels followed with a participation in one of Andrew E’s concerts as one memorable highlight

But the on-going success was aborted when their drummer, Jason, disbanded and joined “Bleud”… which posed as a serious problem again for the group. A number of applicants came to audition but the one considered backed out untimely (for living distantly and driving for than an hour) even before he was included in a major gig. Call it a blessing! A replacement was soon found in Carlos Licas (of the “Servants of the Lord Choir”) and thereafter, the Moxie Band was solid again and actively performing. Bhelle Surban, Will’s wife and daughter of Philippine Novelty singer and comedian Max Surban, is a welcome addition to the group since the former is also a singer/songwriter like her dad. With Bhelle around, Moxie’s brand of music has eventually evolved through simple rock, hard rock, gothic metal, Manila sound (tunog-Pinoy) and what do you know? Disco!

Moxie’s roster of performances included front acts and opening numbers in a number of shows and concerts for “Parokya ni Edgar”, “Kamikazee”, “Andrew E”, David Pomeranz, “Hotdogs”, “Yoyoy Villame” and “Max Surban” and a lot more of lesser named places and events but with an equally successful and fulfilling appearances.

Known for their original ditties and compositions, Moxie, the alternative Rock/Pop band from Eatontown, New Jersey, is one group predicted to catapult to where they are destined… stardom! Consider their string of original compositions in English and Tagalog (OPM): “Deadma”, “Magugunaw Na Ang Mundo”, “Nasaan Na?”, “Pinas”, “Ghost Of Lovers Past” and “This Love Has No End” with some of the songs available for listening pleasure on www.myspace.com/moxiebanda.

Take time out to experience a different brand of music that isn’t noise-and-no-sense-beats… but definitely something that induces a certain kind of high and infectious rhythm   Moxie Band could easily offer. And for as long as playing and singing bands are in, Moxie Band, the all-Pinoy-pride, will never be out of the music scene… for Moxie is just a shy away from being internationally recognized… just patiently awaiting for that elusive big break!

On May 17 and 18, at the Phil-US Expo ’08, watch the Moxie Band perform.  It will be held at the National Guard Armory in Jersey City.  For more information, please call 1.201.332.4112, 1.201.332.4973, 1.201.920.6936.  Or visit Phil-US Expo website at www.phil-us-expo.com.

At the Phil-US Expo ’08 RECKAWRECKA will perform

ReckaWrecka was formed back in November of 2007. Although the band aren't really a destroyer which what the name ReckaWrecka stands for, they never fail catch people’s attention when they perform on stage.

The band originally consisted of only three youngsters, namely Mark, Yman, and Jackne. Initially, these three guys weren't thinking of performing in public, they just wanted to jam during their free time – Mark was on rhythm, Yman on lead guitar, and Jackne on drums.  Meanwhile they were also searching for two others to be the band’s vocalist and bassist.  The three would play around every weekend in a garage and have Mark sing, since they were still searching for the right people that would become part of the band. This was when the members started to recognize Mark's talent in singing. The originally rhythm guitar player then became the band's front man.

After few weeks of playing around, the band decided to play at a restaurant in Bergenfield and have a bass secessionist play with them just to showcase their talents and have others see what they got.  Inspired by the clapping and cheering of the audience who didn't expect such a performance from a group of teenagers, the band decided to do a follow-up to their successful first gig.  From hereon, they were more determined to take the jamming and playing around more seriously. They were able to get more shows and continue to get very good raves. They also found the right guy who would become the band’s official bassist, John, who was a friend of the group. They played in many Filipino restaurants around New Jersey and New York. They were frequently invited to play at different occasions by those who recognized the band's talent to entertain people through their music.

A few months after playing cover songs, the band decided to take it to the next level and have their vocalist compose songs. The band felt it was the right time to make their own songs and revive old Filipino songs just to have their "flavor", as the band would call it. Right now, they are busy practicing and improving their craft so they would be able to please and satisfy their audiences and make those who helped and supported them proud of what they have become.

At the Phil-US Expo ’08 RECKAWRECKA will perform.  If you’re a follower of the group you can watch them play at the New Jersey National Guard Armory at 678 Montgomery St. and Summit Ave. in Jersey City.  For more info, please call 201.920.6936 / 973.239.2539 or visit www.phil-us-expo.com

Hustyle and Delema will join the Phil-US Expo ‘08

Sherwin "aka Hustyle" Morales, Dale "aka"Libores and Producer Edmar "aka Doctah_Ed" Morales known as Hustyle and Delema knew each other since 2003. It started in Carteret NJ at Buddha Kai's studio that sparks a new lyric that they now called Thuglish Ent. It’s a combination of English and Tagalog lyrics, our native language.  With Studio session time being an issue in Buddha Kai's studio, dreams and hopes had to be put on hold (for over 3 years), but with their dreams still hoping to be a reality. Hustyle manage to compensate a good amount of income for a studio.  Determinations and efforts make their dreams come true; Thuglish Studio was built in a ranch in Bedminster, NJ by Hustyle and Doctah_ed in December 2007. With their own studio and own production they gave them chance to work with few of East Coast rappers such as Mike Swift, Lo-pro of Nyfp, Cuatro, and Jaman Serpenties of Dongalo Wreckords.  Experimenting their lyrics created a lot of new ideas and inspirations.  Doctah_Ed saw a bigger picture called Phlip Hop music. It’s like a Reggaeton or Reggae movement.  It’s design to create rhythm in the mainstream music industry.  They hope to continue to push the Phlip Hop and hope to be recognized here in U.S with their Tagalog and English lyrics and hope to work with more Filipino or American artists that will make an impact and difference in the music industry and our country, the Philippines.

Hustyle and Delema will join the Phil-US Expo ’08.  For more information please call 201.920.6936 / 973.239.2539 or visit www.phil-us-expo.com

Sodapop Suicide will join the Phil-US Expo ‘08

The band is an enigma, says one Filipino-American music journalist in describing Sodapop Suicide, one of the most exciting bands in the FilAm music scene.   The band seldom plays live and devotes their time mostly in the studio recording songs and honing their craft. Now the time is ripe for them to release their 2-sided single and their label Soulworks.

Records is now making it available as free downloads on their website- www.soulworksrecords.com .

Sodapop Suicide’s singles are Beauty Queen, a Tagalog rocker with a catchy riff and the spacey-ethereal number, Voltes 5.  The band’s songwriting, mostly done by front man Val Guevarra and guitarist Cho Lopez, is a throwback to a bygone era an era when simplicity meant power, and melody is paramount.

Sodapop Suicide made gigantic waves in 2006 when their single, Sana Naman, from the very successful Filipino-American compilation album Rock in the Box 1, became the first runaway hit of the release. It was such a hit that when the band performed at the pre
launch party at the Knitting Factory NY that year, they almost caused a riot.

In the 2007, the band concentrated in writing and recording their album. By December of that year, they wrapped up their sessions and plotted their single’s release. We are finished with most of our songs. There are some overdubs left but we’re confident that the full album will come out this year. We talked to our label and we agreed to release these songs because we just want everyone to have a slice of what we are going to serve later, says Valter.

However, when asked when the band would hit the road again, Valter could only offer a shrug.  Sodapop Suicide’s free releases are a great way to jumpstart the year not only for their band, but for the Filipino-American music scene as well.

Sodapop Suicide are: Val Guevarra- Vocals/guitar, Cho Lopez “ Lead guitar, Juan ‘Badjik Miranda  Bass guitar, Jowell Padilla– Drums.

ANDREW ILL will join the Phil-US Expo ‘08

Born September 18th 1980 in Queens NY, a true 80's baby "ILL" (Andrew J. Romulo) found his love of music at the age of 14 when his folks brought home his first set of keys. With a long history of musical presence in the home front ILL has been influenced by music genres ranging from all sides of the spectrum. By day, his father sang along to the sounds of American Standards and by night his brother put the needle to the groove, spinning Hip Hop classics in the basement. What was once a child hood hobby soon evolved into a dream to do what he loves for a living. "Some work to live, others live for their work" As a Hip Hop producer lyrist and an engineer ILL invokes every essence of the musical realm limiting him to no one style. ILL considers the lyrics to be the final instrument to the beat thus making or breaking any musical piece. Ill's style is the medium ground between mainstream rap and grass roots hip hop. The content is positive, the flow is intricate and the topics are based on true life experiences that any one can relate to.

Happy Analogue will join the Phil-US Expo ‘08

The Politics of Rock ‘n Roll Language
By Leo Lomboy
INQUIRER.net

First Posted 12:27pm (Mla time) 06/12/2007

One balmy May night, the four members of the Filipino-American band, The Happy Analogues were sitting on the floor in their New Jersey recording studio, with guitars and music sheets on their laps, when the news was delivered to them by one member of their street team: Their debut album, “Lilacs and Politics,” has gone global with Apple’s iTunes music store. It can now be purchased all over the world via the program.

For the band, the news was the cue to finally embark on their journey to try and make it to the American mainstream. It was the signal that it’s time to play in mainstream American venues besides their local Filipino-owned clubs. But as certain as they are about the direction to take, the band is apprehensive about some criticisms they received after releasing their debut.

Some Filipino nationalist groups and supporters think that “Lilacs and Politics” doesn’t represent Filipinos at all - in fact, it’s devoid of anything Pinoy.

Unlike many Fil-Am acts that usually record and release albums with a mixed number of English and Filipino songs, the Analogues came up with an all English release – a strange move for a band whose members were all born in the Philippines and still use Filipino as their primary language in their homes.

“The record was not a deliberate attempt to shun the Filipino language or anything Pinoy. But it was a deliberate attempt to win the American mainstream,” says Ronnie Lao, the bassist and manager of the band.

He has a good point - the band is based here in the States and has a shot at the elusive mainstream with an all-English set. But aren’t they risking alienation from their Pinoy-bred followers by not including any songs in the native language?

“We have released songs in Filipino before we did our debut album. We even have a song about my native Kamuning called ‘Happening sa Kamuning,’ and one of our biggest songs to date is a love single called ‘Alaala,’ which was part of the FIl-Am rock compilation, ‘Rock in the Box’ released in 2006. With those, we don’t think that we would lose any support from our Filipino-speaking fans,” explains Ted Reyes, one of the group’s main songwriters.

Rock and Roll fans have a history of being possessive of their favorite artists. They have this strange notion that they own their artists and, in most cases, refuse to share them with the rest of the populace.

Take the Eraserheads when they made it big in the Philippine mainstream in 1993. After being underground for many years, their ardent underground supporters accused them of selling out. The same happened to
